Hi!

I was going to share a model I’ve created around strategy that includes how I look at:
- Power
- Competitive Advantage
- Actions
You’ll probably get that tomorrow.
Instead, I received an email today from the Ministry of Sport that shared some information about the club I’m on the board of in DC.
Jane Dawber works for my club.
She’s a great coach.
She’s a great leader for youth soccer in the DMV.
She’s a great person.
I am sharing this today to brag about one of the biggest clubs in the DC area.
Why?
Because there are lessons to learn.
Jane leads the rec department at DCSC.
We serve almost 9,000 kids each year.
Teaching them soccer, teamwork, commitment, and more.
Jane is also very tuned into the women’s game.
She coaches a women’s team in the DMW.
She has also helped us grow our girls’ sports programs.
I bring this up because when I joined the board:
- We had about 5,000 kids in rec.
- Our travel program was about 40% smaller.
- The girls programs were neglected.
Jane is part of a team of people that put together a strategy of “Bigger. Better. Stronger.”
Then, delivered.
How does this apply to you?
First, the club and the team asked, “what does success look like??
Second, we defined success looking through the lens of “customers.”
We have numerous customers:
- Kids
- Parents
- Parents
- More
Third, we set a direction.
Fourth, we took consistent action.
This is the same framework you can use as well.
If you are in sports, yes.
Run a theatre, certainly.
Will it work in operas? 100%
One lesson I’ve been trying to teach you is that the frameworks and ideas are transferable.
Seeing Jane and DCSC mentioned in an Australian publication reminded me of that.
Because three years ago, no one was talking about our club.
Strategy made this possible.
The first steps are right there for you.
