The BIG Ticket: Creative Resilience in Arts!

Hi!

My bracket is busted.

Roll Tide, anyway.

Last week we had some fun with the secondary market.

Today, I want to look at David Reece’s piece in Arts Professional. In it, David draws on the example of Toyota to highlight ways for the arts to be resilient.

I’ll build off of David’s points with three of my own to increase your resilience in any situation.

  1. Make Predictions: We have a way of looking backward and drawing conclusions from what happened. A better approach is to predict what you think will happen from a course of action. So you can look back with better clarity.
  2. Make a lot of Bets: I want you to become more comfortable with trying new things. I call this “making bets”. I mean this to be putting small investments into ideas that may or may not work. Some things may work, others may not. The key is to be willing to try new things.
  3. Break the Hold of “We’ve Always Done Things This Way”: Challenge your team to try something you’ve never done before. You won’t get different results doing the same things you’ve always done.

How do these help with resilience?

First, you aren’t taking an all-or-nothing approach.

Second, you are speeding up your innovation metabolism. More cracks at success leads to more chances for you to hit on something.

Third, you have to try new things to get new results.

Let me know how you are practicing resilience in your organization.
