Yellow Cards for not attending matches?!?… A few other thoughts…

Hi!

I’m officially back from my summer holiday this week as I’m off to the Midwest to teach applied brand management to the executive MBA students in the Kelley Direct Online MBA program that is a part of the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University.

BTW, the #1 online MBA program in the world offered by a top 25 business school.

Look at me!?

I’m going through my files, saved links, etc…and I’m going to share some of these articles with y’all today with a few comments.

AudienceView had me on at the start of the summer to talk about brand management for theatres, teams, and people selling tickets:

They’ve since posted a replay of the session.

We hit on the idea of strategy before tactics. We get into “discounts are for dummies”.

In my Kelley class, I’ve gone deeper to discuss: Simplicity/Distinctiveness/Consistency

This was where I began to come up with the idea.

Once I get the class rolling, I’m going to come up with some pieces of training that I can apply and share with y’all.

Give the AudienceView session a watch…especially if you haven’t already.

TKTS celebrates its 50th anniversary:

A few ideas that stick with me:

  • Look at that logo, going on 50 years…distinctive brand assets.
  • The red as well.
  • The resistance to trying something new: isn’t that the story of our time?
  • The issue of audiences getting older? Another thing that matters now?

TKTS was one of those cool things that you’d see in NYC when your office was in Times Square.

The history of the space and the idea is cool, especially from a brand management POV because you don’t build a brand in a day, it can take decades and then you feel inevitable.

Messi is having an impact on MLS

As with anything that is listed on the secondary market, you can’t always look at the listings as the arbiter of what is “hot” or “not” because there is a lot of speculation.

My take is that Messi is bringing a lot of new eyeballs to the MLS.

From talking to my friends around the world, Messi’s performances are amusing but they look at it as much of a quality issue in the MLS as they do how brilliant Messi is.

In this regard, I think the World Cup showed that Messi still has some magic in him when put in the right situations with the right folks around him.

I also know that the quality and investment in MLS have often gone to attackers over defenders.

In thinking through the Messi to Miami idea:

  • What prices are these tickets selling at?
  • Are there legs to this initial demand?
  • Does Messi’s involvement with MLS increase the likelihood that the quality of the league will improve?

Or, will it be a way for MLS to cash in in the short term?

Let me know what your take is by hitting reply!

Yellow Cards for not using your tickets?

This is a wild idea because I’ve seen scan rates in the States of 50-60% or less.

Brentford says 4 yellow cards and you can’t renew your season tickets.

Gtech Stadium is pretty intimate and the atmosphere of Premier League and football matches makes the league great and the experience top notch.

This falls under the stick, but what carrots do you think could be used to achieve the same thing?

Back in the days, the Sonics reward program had me figuring out ways that I could attend as many games as possible. Ultimately, I got enough points to get this fancy Sonics sweatshirt that I still own.

It is amazing.

What do y’all think?

How would it work in the arts and theatre?
