Some of my favorite episodes from 5 years of ‘The Business of Fun’

My podcast: ‘The Business of Fun’ turns 5 in a few days…and I want to celebrate by sharing some of my favorite ideas, episodes, and guests.

Drew McManus: We talked about “one size fits none” and the pervasiveness of those kinds of solutions in the arts and culture. I keep coming back to it because my 2019 trip to Australia symbolizes that thinking when people talk about “getting older and whiter” isn’t necessarily a good long-term strategy for arts and cultural organizations.

Paul Bailey: Paul is a mate from the UK and he was willing to work with me on a specific podcast episode about branding and brand management as a tool to use in an upcoming executive MBA class I’m teaching in brand management. I come back to this conversation because Paul helped me reframe my thinking around brand purpose which I’d always defined as complete BS.

Lyndsey Jackson: Spoiler: I just scheduled this podcast as an excuse to chat with Lyndsey because she’s one of my favorite people going. We talked about serious stuff like the managing a team in a pandemic, rethinking value, and more. Lyndsey’s dedication to always growing as a leader was really evident in our online and offline conversation. Again, she’s the best though!

Cormac Wakeman: MY G came on the podcast to talk about sports business and sports marketing. He still talks about being able to come on the podcast to his friends at school…who knew it was a big deal. He talks about his love of the AFL and the Melbourne Demons and provides a different take on tickets, marketing, and games.

Zoe Scaman: How great was it talking to Zoe? Way better than I thought. The way she talks about finding ideas and developing them was so great!

Ryan Wallman: I had the chance to catch up with Ryan in Melbourne at a bar across the way from the Marvel Stadium. Between the talk I gave for the AFL and hanging out with Ryan, a highlight day from my trip to Australia. Give this episode a listen because Ryan talks about marketing and puts to rest some of the ridiciulous ideas that power so many of marketing’s latest fads.

Oli Shawyer: Oli helped me have the opportunity to do the AFL talk. So he’s on the list no matter what…but this conversation on sales funnels is super helpful to make sure you don’t fall prey to bad ideas on the sales funnel and top of funnel sales activities.

These are just 7 to get you started.
