I read a recent blog post on Inc.com that talked about the 30 books you need to read to be “well-read.”
Their term, not mine.
While I don’t have a huge issue with the books on their list, I do feel like they are traveling a road that is too conventional or too esoteric to really be “well read.”
That said, if I were making a list of 30 books I would force upon someone, here is one:
1. The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles: This is one of the first books I really handed out regularly to friends. This is the story of a marriage falling apart and danger that is always there. The most impressive thing to me is that Bowles doesn’t necessarily give you a description of the main characters, but everyone I have talked with has a similar description of them.
