I recently purchased a pack of 4 of the Domino Project’s newest little project: Zig Ziglar’s Performance Planner. This is an outstanding little book that helps you set goals and reach them.
Now like a lot of people, I set goals or am goal oriented, or what have you. Like a lot of people, I also struggle with whether or not I am setting the right goals, doing the right things, or how can I break the goals down into manageable steps.
I won’t burden you or bore you with a long drawn out description of why to set goals, or how to chunk down your goals into manageable chunks or anything like that. What I will give you is a couple of the lessons that I found valuable from using Zig’s book and rethinking what I am doing.
1. Be as specific as possible. One of the things that Seth mentions in the introduction is that you work on the goal until you achieve it or decide that it isn’t something you want to do. And, I think if you are more specific, you can figure out whether or not it is something that is important to you earlier, which is better. Less wasted time. Winning!
2. Make it a game to enlist as many people into your effort as possible. Not only is it more fun, but it also is likely to chip away some of the troubles you are finding in your way. But, mainly, we are social animals, bringing more people along is more fun!
3. Keeping a goal book or journal is super useful. You have the chance to keep an eye on your direction and you also keep a bit more focus.
4. Most important: Measure! Measure! Measure! Its really great to measure your goals and actions so that you know what is working and what isn’t.
Those are my 4 takeaways from my first week and a half of the Performance Planner.
