Marketing vs. Advertising?

I think too often people confuse the two.

You might ask, “Aren’t they basically the same thing?”

The short answer is “no."

A longer answer would take many, many pages, but I want to give you a few quick examples so that you can start thinking about the ways to differentiate the two.

1.  Advertising is posting banner ads on the Internet.  Marketing is making something that makes those banner ads more than just spam and wasted space at the top of the page.

2.  Advertising is the billboards that line the West Side Highway.  Marketing is finding a way to engage those people that see the ad, not just try to steal a little of their attention as they drive pass.

3.  Advertising is trying to promote all of your new features, bells and whistles as making your tablet the greatest tablet in the world.  Marketing is creating something great, like the iPad.

That’s only 3 examples, but I think they give you a good jumping off point.  I’ll touch on some other ones in a future post.  But, why don’t you tell me some of your favorite examples?
