Is It Required To Be Cutting Edge To Lead?

Yesterday I asked the question “Are you a leader?” and today I want to ask you if you have to be out in front of everything to be a leader or can you hang back a little bit and still be a leader.

When I think of people that are out in front of stuff as leaders, I think of things like Jerry Jones with the Cowboys and his first apparel deal that the NFL owners went nuts over at the time but which lead the NFL to monetize their teams and players in ways that they probably never imagined.

And, when I think of people that aren’t necessarily known for coming up with the newest idea, but find ways to integrate relevant ideas into leadership, I think first of Steve Jobs because he’s an obvious choice with the first Macintosh.  Or someone like Tim Ferris that has made a big part of his career finding experts on topics that are under the radar and leading them out of the shadows into larger audiences through their exposure in working with him.

What do you think?  Who are your best examples?
