At the end of the year I usually post a list of all the books that I have read in the past year. Just to give you some background, I usually try to knock out one book a week. I don’t always hit the mark, but this year I am going to go well past that.
That’s not the point.
Since I’ve made a pretty concerted effort to read diversely this year, I thought I would go through and look at what I’d read and maybe share some of the stuff that I’ve found interesting or useful or just fun so far this year.
I hope you find something that you like:
I’ve definitely been cutting through the fiction this year and something I have rediscovered is the Travis McGee series by John D. MacDonald. These books first started showing up in the 1960s and the big thing about McGee is that he has a boat docked in Bahia Mar, Fort Lauderdale, not far from where I grew up.
As a teenager, these were my stepdad’s favorite books and I’ve really enjoyed coming back to them now. I’d suggest you start at the beginning and work your way through them. They may be a little dated, but you will really enjoy the way that some of the issues that are huge now were already entering the collective mind through Travis McGee 30 or 40 years ago.
A business book I really dug was called The Idea Hunter.
Short reads I enjoyed so far:
‘Guard Your Mission, Stay In Control’ by Seth Goldman
‘Into the Forbidden Zone’ by William T Vollman.
‘Shaken Not Stirred’ by Tim Gunn
These are just a few things that stood out to me. Maybe you will find something here you will enjoy. I’ll add a few things here and there as I find things I want to share or that you might enjoy.
