Pujols vs. Pricing

I just opened my Google Reader and saw that Seth Godin posted a blog about pricing which came on the heels of reading the sports section and seeing the news that the St Louis Cardinals and their star player, Albert Pujols had called off negotiations for the season.

Pujols is probably the best player in the game and if you believe in the free market deserves to be paid accordingly.

For what its worth, he has never been mentioned in regards to using performance enhancing drugs and seems to be a fairly good teammate and produces extreme return for the Cardinals as a business.  Where I find this interesting is that in the case of Albert Pujols he meets all of Seth’s goals for being able to price yourself anyway you want to…

Those three goals are being irreplaceable, essential, and priceless.

Pujols is all three for the Cardinals.  And in St Louis they would imagine him playing anywhere else much the same as a Yankees fan would consider it unfathomable for Derek Jeter to wear any other uniform.

Now this is where this gets interesting…if you meet all three requirements for one team, but you are just a cog for another team like the Cubs, Yankees, or Mets, do you price yourself out of the a place where you are irreplaceable, essential, and priceless for a few dollars?
