I was trying to go through some of the blogs I read this morning and came across this article on AdFreak about Duncan Hines’ producing a racist cupcake commercial.
I was intrigued because the still shot of the ad showed little black cupcakes with pink lips…which isn’t the best image to have spread all over the Internet. But, after watching the ad, I have to say that the people that were raging about this racist ad because of it’s hip hop music and black face are just a little out of line.
If you listen to the music, its definitely some kind of techno/trance beat. And, from an artistic standpoint, I think using a chocolate frosting was probably the only way that they could effectively pull off the imagining of this ad.
All in all, I could see where you could complain about how effective this ad is as an ad. But I would have a hard time calling this one racist.
