Can You Tell You’ve Hit A Tipping Point?

I’m sure you have all heard about the concept of a tipping point. But probably the bigger challenge is understanding when you’ve hit one.

Which is a challenge because they aren’t usually obvious.

I heard Ted Leonsis talk about Monumental Sports’ plans for growing their footprint in sports and digital media over the next few years. He was talking about capturing more and more of the fans’ attention wherever they might consume data.

Which is really smart because consumption habits of consumers have changed dramatically over the last decade…and let’s be honest, that is likely to be a trend that doesn’t slow down over the next 10.

Why do I tie these two things together?

Well, because one of the technologies Ted was talking about was some new cameras and video angles that the organization was going to use to film AFL games for broadcast.

This is important because I think we’ve seen TV ratings for sports and entertainment fall pretty starkly in a very short period of time. Most notably with the decline of the NFL’s ratings and the chord cutting going on with ESPN.

Monumental has a great explanation for the problem.

But the thing is, have we already hit a tipping point where it is going to be tough to turn around the chord cutting and the ratings decline?

Which is really just the tip of a bigger iceburg that would cause a lot of the entertainment and media that we consume to fall along with it.

What say you?
