An Elaboration on My 2011 3 Words

In my previous post, I gave my three words for 2011:

Reinvention

Challenge

Excel

I didn’t elaborate at the time, because I was a little too busy, and I felt that the explanation needed a little more than just a gloss over, quick hit answer.  So here is a more detailed explanation.

———————————————————————–

1.  Reinvention:

2010 was a fairly eventful year.  I had a son, Cormac, who is a pretty awesome kid…if I must say so myself.  I finished a journey of going back to school and getting my degree that would take a long time to explain, but needless to say, I am quite happy with my degree.  And, most importantly, I got some long term health issues fixed that I wasn’t even aware of, but which undoubtedly had been screwing me up for a few years once they were diagnosed.  So 2011 is going to be a year of reinvention…in the total sense of the word.

In 2011, I am going to tackle my career, my personal relationships, my involvement in the community, my health, and my personal development.  And, I am not going to skirt around any challenges.

2.  Challenge:

This plays off reinvention.  I think I had played it safe for a few years, which I think is partly due to not being 100% myself for a bit.  So the goal for 2011 is to blow through and go nuts on challenging myself again.  Some of the awesome things I have done in my life have been because I really wasn’t smart enough to know that I couldn’t do them and tried them and they became successful.  (See my move to Seattle without knowing anyone, no job, no place to stay, and all of that…)

But not to give the wrong impression, challenge can come in any form….and I want to really just push myself to be a bigger and better version of myself.  And as I see these challenges and start to tackle them, I will surely elaborate.

3.  Excel:

The final word, excel, isn’t just the program you make spreadsheets with.  In the dictionary, excel is defined as:

ex·cel

[ik-sel]  Show IPAverb, -celled, -cel·ling.–verb (used without object)1.to surpass others or be superior in some respect or area; doextremely well: to excel in math.–verb (used with object)2.to surpass; be superior to; outdo: He excels all other poetsof his day.And for me, I am going to not only make the effort to surpass myself, I am going to attempt to surpass the expectations that others may have for my work.  But, one thing I will not allow, and I would advise you not to either, is to allow other’s judgements and expectations to stop you.
I’m going to try to keep updating the blog about this…and let you know how this is manifesting itself daily.  So if you are reading this, please hold me accountable.
