One of the great things about the Internet is that it allows you to connect your business and ideas with people all over the world.
What the downside of that is that too many people seem to think that if they just sit around and wait, screaming their thoughts into the Internet wind, that people will find them.
Let’s call that the “if you build a better mousetrap” trap!
You know the story of if you build a better mousetrap they will beat a path to your door.
That’s bogus!
Why is Thomas Edison the father of lightbulb and not Nikola Tesla?
Marketing!
What this means for you is that you have to absolutely go out there and find the permission that you seek.
Sure, permission marketing exists, but you can’t just wait for people to willy nilly grant permission, you need to offer them reasons to grant their permission.
One of the big challenges for many people is not understanding how to ask.
The Internet makes that easy as well.
Do you have a newsletter that you are trying to get out into the world?
You can gain permission with a bribe…like a free report.
You want people to listen to your Twitter rants, maybe start a hashtag and invite people to take part.
You want to start a podcast that gives you a platform to sell your ideas: do it! Then send the link to all of your friends, post it on social media, and target some people that would benefit from hearing the thing.
I think we get trapped by the idea of gaining permission or the fact that if we do great work, people will find us.
Your #1 job is always going to be marketing.
If you don’t market your ideas and yourself, you might get permission, but will it be the right permission at the right time?
