This map from the 2008 presidential election tells a story, but it isn’t likely telling you the entire story.
You see this is a map that shows the voting by counties, and while the representation is accurate, it doesn’t tell you a complete story because it doesn’t account for population.
This map tells another story. And, it is quite different because it has been adjusted for population density.
Which means that if you are a newscaster or a journalist, you can pick the map that most reinforces your POV.
The same thing plays out in businesses because we can manipulate the way we present data and ideas in a way that conforms to our POV.
In some instances, maybe this is for the best.
In other instances, this is likely not the right way to do it.
The point being that how we measure things matters.
But just as important as measuring the right things is learning the right lessons.
