About a dozen years ago, Tom Hanks gave a speech at Vassar College and he brought up an idea called “The Power of Four.”
To paraphrase Tom, he said that four people can change the world.
He talked about Microsoft, the Beatles, and a few other examples, but the gist of it was that four people took you from helpless to help.
Today, we need to be reminded of that more than ever because it can all too often feel like we are helpless:
- Helpless in the face of politics as normal.
- Helpless in the face of corporations that treat us like numbers on a spreadsheet.
- Helpless to create something that stands out because the world is filled with noise
I think it is important to remember that most big changes start with small groups of people.
To use Tom Hanks’ example, you didn’t even need 4 people to start Microsoft or Apple.
The Beatles were only ever John, Paul, George, and Ringo.
You can do a lot with just a few people…and action will help you move from helpless to helpful.
